New Mexican restaurant to open temporarily in local Event Center

Kimball will soon boast a Mexican restaurant once again, as Mi Sinaloa is relocating to the Kimball Event Center 3 days each week following Kimball City Council’s approval of a lease agreement for the business.

The lease was discussed at the Jan. 16 council meeting, and according to Special Projects Coordinator, Amy Sapp, one council member asked if the City is subsidizing the business and if there would be a deadline on the lease.

Council was assured that any business entering into the same long-term agreement would be given the same rates.

Mi Sinaloa entered into a month-to-month agreement with the City to use the event center while searching for a building of their own, and, after six months, the City will ask for a ‘progress report’ on the business’s permanent solution.

Owners of Mi Sinaloa, the Castro family, have already reached out to a local building owner in downtown Kimball and hope to see the building soon, Sapp said, though they will likely have to invest in some remodeling work before opening in any local building.

The Castros also plan to relocate their family to Kimball.

Rent for the business will be $600 per month with a $100 deposit for use of flatware and dishes, according to Sapp. A similar agreement was struck with the Carpenter Center when they extended some services to Kimball.

Sapp shared that, following the Business Resource meeting, reported on last week, many people wanted follow-ups with Rural Enterprise Assistance Program (REAP) and Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC).

The Event Center could potentially house classrooms for college courses and space for business counseling for those that are wanting to start up or need assistance for their current business.

Other options for those extended services may include the Kimball Public Library or the original business incubator at the original Kimball High School, located south of Main Street Market.

Though plans for these services are still in the very early stages, Sapp is reaching out to WNCC, NBDC as well as local resources regarding the possibilities.
