Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

Let the New Year begin! And for you sports fans this means you can bundle up and get ready to follow our local school sporting events which get underway again this week.

It all starts today for you Kimball High sports fanatics with the Longhorn wrestlers off to Morrill for the Western Trails Conference Tournament that gets underway at 9 a.m. Thursday, and later this evening the High School Basketball teams are in action at Sidney with both JV games set for 4 p.m., followed by the girl’s varsity at 5:30 and the boy’s varsity at 7 p.m.

On Saturday the wrestlers are at the Garden County Tournament with another 9 a.m. start, and the basketball are at home hosting Chase County for early games with both JV contests to start at 2 p.m., followed by girl’s varsity at 3:30 and boy’s varsity at around 5 p.m. The Music Parents will be holding a Soup Supper so come hungry and help their cause.

On Monday (January 8) the school calendar shows our freshman girls basketball team playing at Banner County at 5:30, and on Tuesday more basketball with Kimball at Potter-Dix for a full slate with JV play at 3 and 4:30, followed by varsity games at 6 and 7:30. Now that sould be enough action to get your blood pumping, and the entire month of January is going to be a busy month as the Junior High boy’s basketball cranks up as well, and there is a Federation Wrestling most every weekend somewhere, and freshman games, besides all of the High School contests.

Kimball takes the Christmas break off with no games while a lot of area schools take part in Holdiay tournaments. The Longhorns came off of winning performances in their last outing at Bayard and the boys had their top performance of the young season winning over Bayard on the road 73-33 and the girls picked up their fourth win of the season 56-47 despite having several key players out with illness or injury. The Lady Horns are 4-2 as they resume play and the boys are even at 3-3, but both Kimball teams face a tough return as Sidney has talented clubs for both girls and boys action, and Chase County will be another tough opponent, and then the girls will face a very talented Potter-Dix team.

Oh well, we are all rested up and ready to get our bleacher seats ready for more action. We did get to enjoy some really exciting college football over the break and what a great win for Coach Scott Frost and his UCF team that finished out at 13-0 after winning over the highly favored Auburn club in the Peach Bowl. How exciting for all of Nebraska to have Coach Frost returning to his home state to take over the reins of the Husker program.

We can also return to following the exploits of our very own Mike Daum as he leads his South Dakota State Jack Rabbitts to victories in the Division One College Basketball scene. Last I looked, Mike was averaging around 25 points, although he didn’t score much in the last game that SDS won handily and Mike got a lot of rest time.

Happy New Year everyone and let the fun begin!
