Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

Some exciting local golf news this week. Let’s start with Dillon Wise and his Hole-in-One this past Saturday July 29. Dillon, at age 16, and heading into his junior year of High School, scored his first Hole-in-One, and did it on Hole number 15, which is a par four! I don’t recall anyone else ever doing this on a par four hole at least since the course has been expanded to the current 18 holes of play!

Dillon was playing with Ethan Greenwood when he got his ace. He said “I looked all around the trees and the grass before I looked in the hole, and there it was”. This means that his drive carried at least 342 yards from the Blue Tees, as listed on the official score card, up and over the trees and into the hole. You know know what Dad, Four Winds Pro Chad Wise said? “He got one before I got one.” Yeah Chad, you don’t hear of too many Hole-in-One shots on a par four. Congrats Dillion and may you experience many more.

Jordan Greenwood, Kimball High grad from this past spring, had a full week of golf playing in the Nebraska Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament held at the Beatrice Country Club Golf Course in Beatrice, Nebraska. Jordan entered at the request of the Southeast Community College Golf coach where Jordan will be playing his college golf while continuing his education.

This field of golfers consisted of 126 of the state’s best who played two days to see who would make the cut for two more days before a winner was crowned. After the first two days, the field was cut in half to 63 golfers and Jordan finished in the number 50 spot, meaning he finished ahead of 73 golfers, and he made the cut and got two more days of golf.

His rounds in order were 76-80-82-8, scores he wasn’t pleased with, but since he hadn’t picked up a golf club since July 4, as he has been putting in 12 hour days, and sometimes more, working for the local elevator during the wheat harvest, he hasn’t had any time to work on his golf game. “I played alright at times, but my iron game was off due to lack of practice, but it was a fun experience” Jordan said.

His Southeast Coach arranged for housing for Jordan, and a future team mate who lives in Kansas, came down just to learn the course, although he couldn’t play being from out of state, actually volunteered to caddy for Jordan. I bet Jordan already has a favorite Southeast team mate! Jordan said “I really like the course and this will be our school home course”. Jordan has plans to play the Gering Open later this month along with his brother, Jeff, and Dad, Kenny, then it’s off to Beatrice and the season gets underway the latter part of this month. I know we all are anxious to see how Jordan will do at the College level after such an illustrious Kimball High golf career. I will keep you readers informed, and good job at Beatrice!

A total of nine teams turned out this past Saturday evening to compete in the two-person alternate shot event at the Four Winds. The team of Charlie Carlson and Mike Ferguson won top honors with their 37.75 handicap score over nine holes. Don Trofholz and Roger Dohse was second with 37.87. No special event this Saturday evening as this Saturday is the Kimball Hospital Foundation 4-Person Scramble. The course will be closed to open play from 12 noon to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, so you open golfers be sure and call for tee times.

There is already a large field of teams entered for the Foundation Tournament but you could possibly still get a team entered by calling the Pro Shop. Keep your head down and hit ‘em straight.
