Harold D. Steele

Harold "Spike" D. Steele, age 94 of Potter, NE passed away at Kimball County Manor Monday, February 6, 2017.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, February 11th in the Prairie West Church in Potter with Pastor Betsy Galloway-Carew officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Potter Cemetery. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Friday from 1-7:00 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made in Harold's name to the Prairie West Church or the Potter Rescue Unit. Harold Dwight Steele was born February 21, 1922, in Banner County, Nebraska, to William Henry and Blanche Alpha (Fitz) Steele. He attended school in Banner County graduating from the eighth grade in 1936. He moved with his parents to Dix, Nebraska in 1942, where he helped on a 3400 acre farm and ranch operation before being drafted into the Army on July 13, 1945. Having completed a motor mechanics course he was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Regiment, Chunchon, Korea, where he served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in motor transportation. He attained the rank of Sergeant before being discharged on January 23, 1947. That same year he rented a farm near Potter, Nebraska, where he did row crop farming and fed cattle. In 1967 he bought a farm in the Sidney Draw area and added wheat farming to his row crop and cattle operation. Harold retired in 1999 and went back to farming in 2001 and retired again in the fall of 2003.

Harold was baptized on December 7, 1947 at the First Christian Church in Scottsbluff and where he married Doris L. Pfeifer on January 11, 1948. They established a residence in Potter where they have resided since their marriage and where they raised their five children.

Harold joined the Methodist Church in Potter on May 8, 1948 where he became active in helping with the construction of the present church. At different times he served as the Finance Chair; the Trustees Chair; the Chair of the Administrative Board as well as being a Sunday School Teacher.

In 1951 Harold received his Pilot's License following instruction through the Nelson Flying Service.

During his years in the Potter community Harold served as a committee member for the Boy Scout Troop in Potter. He was a member of the Potter Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years and served a time as president. Harold served on the Potter Village Board for 15 years and served as the Mayor in 1985. He was a permanent member of the Potter American Legion Post No. 291, a Past Commander of the Post, and Past Commanders of Cheyenne County, District Four and of Area D. He was a grandson of a Civil War Veteran and a member of the Nebraska Department of Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Harold was a sales representative for the Archer Petroleum Company of Omaha and the Cargill Seed Company for more than 25 years.

Travels included to seven National Conventions of the American Legion including Hawaii and a trip to Germany with a side trip to Normandy, France for the 60th Anniversary of D Day.

Harold is survived by his wife Doris; sons Jerry (Jeanne) of Potter and Thomas (Corinna) of Hartselle, Alabama; daughters Susan (Larry) Sisson, Longmont, Colorado; Vicki Martin, Lakewood, Colorado; and Jennifer (Ric) Cook, Lawrence, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren and 5 step-great-great grandchildren; 5 nieces and 9 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Bernard; Maurice; Billy; Bob; sister Irene Wallin and their spouses; grandsons Brian Steele; Logan Sisson and step grandson Jason J. Cook; son-in law Richard Martin and nephew Edward Steele.
