Lady Horns win at Bridgeport, fall to Gordon-Rushville

A win and a loss for the Kimball High girls the past weekend. The win came Friday night at Bridgeport with the Lady Horns coming out on top 45-40 and the loss came Saturday night at Gordon-Rushville 64-44. The Kimball girls are now 4-5 in the win-loss department.

Kimball had to battle back in the second half to get the win at Bridgeport as they trailed 13-8 at the quarter break and were down 21-18 at half time. Kimball took their first lead in the contest early in the third period after Kate Reader scored on a move inside, Alexis Lulf hit one of her patented 3 pointers, and then hit another one to give them leads of 23-21 and 26-23. Carli Wurdeman then hit a trey off an assist from Kate Reader and got another layin basket from another Reader assist, and Kimball outscored the host team 15-7 to take a 33-28 margin into the fourth period. In the fourth quarter Kimball maintained that 5 point margin as both teams scored 12 points. Kimball made 6 free throws, and missed 6 free throws, in the final stanza and were 10/18 from the line for the game.

Kate Reader has a solid performance leading her team to victory with 22 points hitting a pair of treys and going 6/6 at the foul line. The talented sophomore also pulled 12 rebounds, had 4 blocks, 12 steals, and 6 assists in an all around outstanding game according to coach Chauncey Pedersen. Alexis Lulf hit a paid of treys and finished with 8 points and had 6 rebounds. Carli Wurdeman had 5 with 1 trey, Jannel Fiehtner 4, Hannah Biesecker 4, and Justine Heeg 2.

In team stats, Kimball shot 15/47 from the field for 32% including 5/15 on 3 point attempts for 33%, were 10/18 at the line, had 32 rebounds, 16 steals, 10 assists, 21 turnovers and 11 personal fouls.

Scoring for Bridgeport were Brittany Nelson with 11, Brittney Newkirk 9, Emily Baxter 4, Kaitlyn Nein 5, Alexix Corman 5, Riley Hall 4, and Grace Dobrinski 2.

Reader had her third consecutive double-double at Gordon scoring 20 points and pulling 12 rebounds, along with 1 block, 2 steals, and 3 assists, but the Lady Horns could not keep pace with the likes of the Lady Mustangs J. Perez who finished with a game high 23 points and K. Campbell with 20.

The host school jumped out to a 22-2 lead at the first quarter break and from that point on Kimball played them fairly equal but it was too little, too late. With a 40-17 margin at half time the Lady Mustangs coasted to the win.

Other Kimball scoring saw Alexis Lulf with her usual scoring from long range hitting a pair of treys and finishing with 9 points. Carli Wurdeman hit a trey and had 5 points, Jannel Fiehtner nailed a trey and had 4, plus 10 rebounds. Lacey Klinkhammer had 4, and Justine Heeg 2.

Kimball was 15/52 from the field, 4/17 on 3 point attempts, 4/5 at the line, had 38 rebounds, 11 steals, 5 assists, 30 turnovers, and 16 fouls.

The winners had 44 rebounds, 6 blocks, 19 steals, 18 assists, 19 turnovers, and 24 fouls.
