Kimball boys run record 7-2 with weekend wins

The Kimball High boys went on the road this past weekend and picked up two more wins at Bridgeport and Gordon running their season record to 7-2. No problem at Bridgeport on Friday night with the Horns winning 69-46 but had to battle hard to win at Gordon Saturday night 58-53.

Coach Nick Kuxhausen had lots of praise for the play of his team over the weekend stressing the defense. "Our defensive play as a team is what made our wins possible this past weekend," said Kuxhausen. "The transition from good defense to offense give us good scoring power as well," he said.

With Jordan Greenwood scoring 12 1st quarter points, Kimball held an 18-11 lead at the quarter break and was up 38-22 at half time. Izaac Reuter was playing strong on the boards and dishing out assists. The only negative was an ankle injury to Colton Mielke shortly after he scored on a hard drive to the basket. He was done for the night, but proved to not be serious and he came back to play Saturday night. Jaden Withrow tallied 8 points in the second period including a pair of treys and Greenewood had 19 in the books by half time. Ed Barnes had checked in and played strong, accounting for 5 second period points.

Kimball coaches were going to the bench early giving lots of players some varsity playing time. They held their own and contented to outscore the Bulldogs. Brandon Barker had a good night, Barnes continues to shine, Zane Antony hit a trey, and Corey Travit hit a pair of buckets inside late. Another scare when Anthony went down hard but a sore jaw didn't keep him from returning to play.

Greenwood led the Horns with 24 points going 9/16 from the field including 2/3 on 3 point tries and 4/4 at the line. He also charted 4 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists with all around good team play and limited minutes. Jaden Withrow in double figures with 11 hitting 3 treys and had 4 rebounds. Brandon Barker finished with 10 points, Ed Barnes had 8 with 2 treys. Izaac Reuter had 4 points but led the team in rebounds and steals with 6 in each category. Travis with 4, Anthony with 3 on his trey shot, Mielke 2, Kyle Spicer 2, and Grant Hickman 1 rounded out Kimball scoring.

In team stats, Kimball was 26/57 from the field including 8/18 from 3 point land, 9/12 at the line. They had 29 rebounds, 15 steals, 8 assists, 9 turnovers and 17 fouls.

Eric Stevens led Bridgeport with 16 points, Connor Wiggins had 9, Kaleb Lusseto 8, Logan Nicholas 7, Declan Jeffries 4, and Seth Loomis-Goltl 2.

The Longhorns led at every quarter break after their long road trip to Gordon, but they had to battle hard to come home with another win. Greenwood led Kimball once again with 21 points including 1 trey and 6/7 foul shooting. Withrow in double figures with 10 points and nailed 2 treys. Reuter also in double figure scoring with 10 going 3/5 from the field and 4/5 at the line. Barker had 9 points with 1 trey and 4/4 foul shooting. Barnes hit a trey and had 6 points and Mielke had 2. Barker emerged top rebounder with 9 followed by Reuter and Barnes with 8 each.

In other team stats, Kimball was 18/45 from the field including 5/18 on 3 pointers, a very good 17/21 at the line. They had 33 rebounds, 1 block, 6 steals, 3 assists, 14 turnovers, and 17 fouls.

Gordon/Rushville scoring was led by Dylan Schwarting and Korby Campbell with 14 each, Trace Beguin 9, and Jared Nelson 8.
