Banner County renews superintendent contract

The Banner County Board of Education held a quick and efficient meeting, ending both the semester and the year.

On Dec. 12, during their regular meeting, the board approved Lana Side’s superintendent’s contract, extending it through the end of 2019 and approving her 2017-18 salary of $103,000 plus an additional $270 per month for transportation supervisor duties.

Congratulations went out to the One-Act play cast, crew and coaches Rebecca Lashmett and Brandi Tallmage for the amount of time and dedication that went into the production.

Three students competed in the District FFA contest in Chadron on Nov. 16. Sierra Flores finished fifth in natural resources speaking, earning a blue ribbon. Riley Mason and Seth Dvorak each received red ribbons in their respective divisions.

Renewal of the 2017-18 contract with the Aging Office of Western Nebraska was approved. That office pays the school 70 cents per person, per meal for those senior citizens over 60 who eat at the school during normal school hours. The school is currently receiving approximately $60 per month through this contract.

New gym floor tarps were purchased and are reported to look nice and be much easier to work with. The four old tarps are being offered for sale through sealed bids. Contact the superintendent’s office for more information.

A new part-time para professional may be hired for two hours a day to help cover elementary reading groups and as a substitute for other paras.

The school’s previous attorney of 22 years is retiring the end of the year and KSB Law Firm of Lincoln, Nebr. has been hired to represent the district in the future.

The program of “Serving Locally Grown Meat” has been fulfilled for the year. This included two hogs from the McGowan family, and one beef each from Grant Lerwick and the Olson Ranches. The school is still in need of donations of $2,000 to cover the processing costs. Contact the superintendent’s office for more information or to donate any amount to help cover the costs of processing.
