Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Raves, rants and reality

There are so many great items to RAVE about this week, that it makes my heart sing (hope you don't mind me borrowing your saying, Larissa).

I want to first start with Sunday's Fun Day at Beer & Loathing benefitting the Friends of the Goodhand Theater. Heather, Nate, Dave, Jordan and David, you created a superb shindig that offered fun to the community while helping the community at the same time to the tune of $1,908. And a big shout out to all the dunkees, you know who you are. (See photos below)

Another group of people I want to RAVE about is the men at the Masonic Lodge for considering BINGO to be played in your building. I look forward to years of both calling and winning at your establishment.

This is a bit self-serving, but I want to RAVE about the incredible group of ladies I work with. If you only knew how much time, energy, heart and soul they all put into this paper, y'all would read it more. Seriously, I don't know who would volunteer for such an underpaid and selfless job as working for a community paper that people love to not read. I've realized in my time here that we must all do it out of community commitment more than any other reason.

After all these great raves I hate to even bring up a rant and yet, I do have one and I guarantee I'm not the only one ranting about this issue. My RANT of the week is simply the dangerously fast and careless driving of the gravel trucks that speed through town. We all know what I'm talking about and I know you all complain about it too. Just yesterday, during the lunch hour, as I was pulling out of the grocery store parking lot a gravel truck sped past me, obviously going over the speed limit. As I followed behind, a small white dog with brown and black markings looked like it might cross the street. Now, obviously the dog should not be running loose, however, it was and luckily for the dog it was smart enough to turn around before getting squished by the gravel truck that didn't even bother to slow down when the pup started to cross the road. By the time I arrived at the stop light, the gravel truck was literally out of sight heading west on 30, and as I know I was going only slightly less than the speed limit, it makes sense that the truck must have been speeding. Is it going to take a serious accident to make these people slow down? I pray that is not the case.

The REALITY is that autumn is nearly here, the weather is excellent, in my opinion, and Farmer's Day is just around the corner. Let's all make sure to get out next weekend and enjoy ALL there is for us to enjoy. Festivities will kick off Friday with the soup supper at the Senior Center and going strong throughout the weekend ending Sunday, with a Square dance at the 4-H building. I most look forward to the parade, entering the pie and cake baking contest, watching the crazy kids attempting the mechanical bull at Beer & Loathing, shopping at the Library book sale, going to the new Old Tyme Shooting Gallery, watching the demolition derby and hopefully winning something from the Historical Society Gun Raffle... just to name a few of my favorite things.

Why don't y'all make plans to get out of the house, stay in town, support and ENJOY "OUR" TOWN next weekend, it only comes once a year after all!
