Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

I am not sure that spring has sprung but I do know that the Spring Sports practices has begun at our area schools and throughout the state of Nebraska. Coach Gene Mohr had his Kimball High track and field athletes working out, and in, as they ran the halls at the high school and in the gymnasium, starting this past Monday. Coach Chad Wise will get his Kimball High boy’s golf team going this week as well if the weather and the condition of the Four Winds Golf Course allows. The school calendar shows the first track meet the Longhorns will be involved in is the Chadron State College Indoor meet on March 19. The Kimball High Invitational is set for March 24.

Coach Luke Dea has been working towards establishing a Kimball Junior Legion Baseball Team and he is asking any young men who are interested to show up this evening (Thursday, March 3) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kimball High Student Center. It would be nice to see a Legion program once again in Kimball.

MIKE DAUM was named Player of the Game twice this past week as he led his South Dakota State Team to wins over Oral Roberts and North Dakota State.

The Jackrabbitts won 73-65 over Oral Roberts with Daum playing 23 minutes, scoring 20 points while going 9/15 from the field and 2/2 at the foul line, had 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal and I hope some of you fans got to see the huge dunk he scored over a would-be defender!

In the 71-59 win over North Dakota State, Daum had 27 minutes, again scored 20 points going 8/14 from the field and 1/2 on 3 pointers, 3/4 at the line, and had 7 rebounds. Player of the Game in both of these contests and this young man is really putting on a show in his first season of Division One Basketball. Give a Big Shout Out to this former Kimball High Longhorn.

KENDALL FERGUSON saw his season, and college basketball career, come to an end this past week as his Hastings College team lost to Midland College 79-73 in the quarterfinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament at the Midland Events Center.

The former Kimball High standout did every thing he could to keep the season alive as he led the Broncos with 19 points and 10 rebounds, had a block and a steal in his 29 minutes of court time.

In his only year as a varsity player for the Hastings Men after signing to play football for the Broncos, and doing so his first two years at Hastings and having to quit that sport after suffering injuries, he really stood out for the Broncos.

Kendall ended up as the top rebounder in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with 257 rebounds averaging 9.18 in 28 games played. He also scored 333 points averaging 11.89 shooting 55.4% from the field including 36.5% on 3 point attempts making 19 of 52 attempts and shot 68% at the line converting 68 of 100 attempts. He grabbed 257 rebounds total, had 33 assists, 33 steals and 26 blocked shots. Kendall will graduate this spring from Hastings and is ready to get out into the business world and start a career that will include making money. However, he does have an attractive offer to play some professional basketball oversees in Europe! What an experience that could be! I have said it before, and I will say it again, Kendall is the best, four-year all-around athlete I have had the privilege to observe during the years I have watched Kimball High athletics. He excelled from freshman through senior years in football, basketball, golf, and also in baseball. He is the BEST! How about a Big Shout Out for Kendall Ferguson?
