Banner County Historical Day set for Saturday

All roads lead to Harrisburg is the theme for the 126th annual Banner County Historical Day, which is set for Saturday.

The Banner County Volunteer Fire Department will host a pancake feed at the fire hall beginning at 7 a.m., and they will be accepting a free will donation.

The fun run, sponsored by the Banner Capital Bank, will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the fire hall.

“You can run or walk the 5K course,” said event coordinator Erica Cochran. “There is a mile race that we do for kids 12 and under.”

Entrants for the barbecue cook-off will need to be registered by 9 a.m. This event, sponsored by Platte Valley Bank, will have entries in pork ribs, beans and other meats. Contestants will vie for cash prizes awarded for the top two in each category as well as a people’s choice award.

The Banner County Historical Days parade will kick off at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at the Banner County School that will be hosted by the Banner County FFA chapter.

From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., area quilters will show their wares in the museum church.

Throughout the morning, from 9 a.m. until noon, the Banner County School Booster Club and the Central Banner 4-H Club will provide historical kids games in the courtyard by the barn.

Additionally, the Central Banner County 4-H Club will provide games from 1-2 p.m. for the entire family and the club will be selling concessions in the shelter throughout the day.

Cowboy poet and country commentator R.P. Smith will speak at the museum at 2 p.m. and life memberships will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

By 4 p.m., the smell of barbecue ribs should be enough to drive those in attendance to distraction, however, judging begins at the shelter at that time and winners will be announced around 5 p.m.

The day will wrap up with a talent show at the Banner County School’s big gym as a fundraiser for the girls’ summer basketball camp. Admission for adults is $5 and children four to 12 cost $3 and those 3 and under are free.
