Potter-Dix boys, girls earn district track championships

Coyotes, Lady Coyotes to compete in 22 events at state

The Coyotes have plenty to howl about heading into this week's state meet in Omaha.

The Potter-Dix boys and girls each won their respective district track meets last week and will compete in 22 individual events or relays at state. The boys will compete in 13, while the girls will compete in nine.

Kelsey Rozelle earned a state berth in four different events after winning the long jump and high jump at district and taking second place in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Jake Johnson, Cooper Hicks and Coby Hicks will each compete in two individual events at state. Johnson won the 800 meter run in 2:06.25, besting teammate and state qualifier Cameron Purcell by just over six seconds. He won the 1600 meter run in 4:54.37.

Coby Hicks won the pole vault and took second in the 110 meter hurdles, while Cooper Hicks finished second in both the 400 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles to earn state berths in those events.

The Coyotes also took the top spot in both the 4x400 meter dash and 4x800 meter dash.

Potter-Dix rolled to the win in the team standings at district with 153 points. Garden County finished second with 119 points, the only other team to break 100 on the day.

Alexus Rozelle won both the shot put and discus to lead the Lady Coyotes' state-bound contingent. She won the shot put with a top throw of 38-11.5, and took the top spot in the discus with a throw of 121-06.

Ryley Hicks also had an individual win, taking first in the pole vault in 8-0. Teammate Payton Franklin also qualified for state. She tied for second with a vault of 7-06. Franklin also took second in the 100 meter hurdles and qualified for state in that event as well.

Anna McLaughlin and Regyn Hicks each tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Both jumpers qualified for state in that event.

The Lady Coyotes also took second in the 4x400 meter relay and 4x800 meter relay and qualified for state in each event.

In the team standings at district, Potter-Dix scored 125 points en route to the district title. The Lady Coyotes' nearest competition was Crawford with 94 points.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Burke Stadium in Omaha. The Class D events get underway at 3:30 p.m. Central time on Friday.
