Kimball boys hoops team falls to state-ranked Hemingford

The Kimball boys ran up against a red hot Hemingford ball club this past week and came up on the short end of the stick losing 56-34 to the number 10 C-2 state ranked Bobcats.

The hosting Bobcats jumped out to a 17-3 first quarter lead with Colton Stull's lone trey basket all the points the Horns could muster in that time frame. Kimball scored the first 5 points of the second quarter and closed the gap somewhat but were trailing 35-16 at half time, and 47-23 going into the fourth period.

Enrique Cajero was Kimball's lone player to hit double figure scoring with 10 going 5/7 from the field. Stull finished with 7 points with 1 trey and had 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Jon Withrow also had 7 with 1 trey, Michael Ferguson 4, Angel Flores 2, Tyler Magninie 2, Trent Rutledge 1 along with 6 rebounds, and Jaden Withrow 1.

As a team, Kimball shot 2/4 at the foul line, had 14 fouls, 11 turnovers, was 15/54 from the field going 2/15 on 3 point attempts, had 8 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds for 25 total, 8 steals and 4 assists.

Hemingford had 38 rebounds, only 5 fouls, was 11/21 at the line, 18/43 on 2 point field goals and 3/14 on 3 pointers. They were led in scoring by Tanner Benge with 18, Matthew Wood 15, Colt Foster 8, Layne Huss 8, Brady Turek 4, and Johnny Manning 3.

The Kimball boys will close out the regular season this Friday at Mitchell with JV game time set for 5:30 with the boys varsity to follow. The Kimball boys will move into sub-district tournament play this coming Tuesday (Feb. 24) at Gering along with Bayard, Bridgeport, and Hemingford. Game times will be at 5:30 and 7 p.m. with the winners to meet for the sub-district championship on Thursday, Feb. 26.

Hemingford also won the junior varsity boys game 57-49.

Jordan Greenwood led Kimball with 17 points with 1 trey. Tyler Magninie had 15 with 3 treys, Trent Rutledge 12 with 3 treys, Jaicob Cole 3, and AJ Williams 2. The difference was in fouls and foul shots with Kimball assessed for 24 fouls and Hemingford 10. Kimball was 1/5 at the foul line and the winners 11/22.
