Wildcats drop close games to Leyton, Creek Valley

Leyton pulled away in the second quarter and held off Banner County for a 48-40 win on Friday.

The two teams were nip and tuck throughout the first quarter. Tyson Dahlgrin scored the first of his 23 points with a layup just 23 seconds into the game to give the Wildcats (0-5) the initial lead. Leyton tied it up before Michael McKown's jumper put the Wildcats back on top, and a Dahlgrin free throw gave Banner a 5-2 advantage. The Wildcats led 7-4 on Dahlgrin's layup with 2:29 left in the first quarter, before Leyton came back to take an 8-7 lead. Dahlgrin's foul shot with 25 seconds left in the opening period tied the game once again.

Neither team found the basket for the first 2:15 of the second quarter, before Leyton's Kenny Ernest hit a jumper to break the tie and give the visiting team a 10-8 advantage. Ernest's bucket was the start of an 8-0 Leyton run that ended on a Zach Hellie layup with 2:49 left in the half. McKown got Banner back on the right foot with a trey from the top of the key, and Dahlgrin's layup on a nice move to the basket cut the deficit to 16-13 with 1:55 left until halftime. The two teams traded points over the final 1:40 of the half and Leyton held a 22-17 advantage at the break.

Leyton used a strong start to the third quarter to pull away for good. The visiting team outscored Banner 10-2 to open the second half for a 32-19 lead with 5:08 left in the third period. The Wildcats put together a 5-0 run to claw back into the game, with free throws from McKown, a Dahlgrin layup and a foul shot by Dalton Jordan to cut the deficit to 32-24 at the 2:01 mark of the third quarter. The Wildcats trailed 36-26 heading into the final period.

In the fourth, Leyton held a double digit advantage for most of the quarter until Banner managed to chip the lead away late.

Dahlgrin led Banner with a double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. McKown added 14 points for the Wildcats.
