Turnovers haunted the Banner County girls in a 60-33 home loss on Friday against Leyton.
The Lady Wildcats (1-5) held close early before turnovers proved the difference in the defeat. Banner turned the ball over 41 times, compared to just 17 turnovers for Leyton.
MaKenna Dahlgrin got things going early for Banner, scoring a layup with an assist from Shay White for a 2-0 lead just 47 seconds into the game. Leyton came back for a 6-3 advantage, before Ashlynne Hanan's jumper at the 3:24 mark of the first quarter cut the deficit to 6-4. Leyton took a 9-4 lead before a White free throw made it 9-5, and held an 11-5 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Turnovers haunted the Lady Wildcats for much of the second quarter. They had turnovers on their first six possessions of the quarter as Leyton expanded its lead to 20-5 with 6:22 left in the half. After a time out, Hanan's jumper at the 6:02 mark of the half stopped the bleeding and cut the deficit to 19-7, but it was too much for the Lady Wildcats to overcome.
Leyton led 35-16 at halftime and outscored Banner 14-1 in the third quarter.
Dahlgrin had a strong game for the Lady Wildcats with a double-double. The freshman scored a team-high 13 points, pulled down 10 boards and also led the way with five blocks. Hanan added nine points and eight rebounds for Banner.
