Pheasants Forever youth mentor hunt

The Mile High Chapter of Pheasants Forever held its Youth Mentor Hunt last Saturday. There were 11 kids that participated along with seven mentors. The youth hunters must have completed and passed a hunter safety course to be able to participate. The day consists of a refresher talk on their hunter safety, provided by Larry Stahla, then a talk by Todd Filipi, the Wildlife Biologist from Scottsbluff. The group then shoots clays, and then practice knocking on the door and asking the land owner for permission to hunt on their land. They receive their hunting vests from Pheasants Forever along with other items they can use while hunting. The group then headed to farm land owned by Jim Young, where the birds had been planted. The youth break up into groups with mentors and then go hunting, each getting the chance to shoot a pheasant along with working on hunter safety. They also had a chance to hunt alongside a dog belonging to Dale Moore. Copper is a German Shorthair Pointer and was very excited to be out hunting with the kids. The kids were then brought back to town where they learn how to clean the birds on their own.
