Hunsaker honored in top 100 SUU football players of century

Kimball's Jared Hunsaker was notified back in September that he was to be honored by Southern Utah University as a Top 100 Football Player for that learning establishment. Hunsaker was a 1987 high school graduate of Grantsville High in Grantsville, Utah, and became a member of the Southern Utah University Football Team in 1987.

"I went in as a fullback/line backer but they had a hard time figuring out what to do with me as they thought I was a bit too slow for a running back and too short as a line backer." Jared played line backer for a year, then was switched back to fullback, then played his final two years as a line backer. Evidently he wasn't too short or too slow as he was selected by a vote of the fans, coaches, and players as a top 100 player and was the only player selected from the class of 1993.

Jared's career was interrupted too as he went on a church mission in 1988-90, then returned and played from 1991 to 1994. This year was the l00th year of football at Southern Utah and thus brought about the naming of the Top 100.

"I received an E-mail about being selected to the Top 100 and I thought it was some kind of a fund raiser or something. I made a couple of calls to some of my former team mates that I knew should have made this list for certain and I found out it was all legit. We went out for the ceremony and I was presented a plaque at mid-field and my family got to be there with me. Our daughter Courtney is going to school there right now and we got to spend some time with her so that was special. In fact, she plays in the Pep Band. Before this is allover I guess they are going to narrow it down to a Top 22 so we will see what this might bring" he said.

Southern Utah University has played a big role in the life of Jared Hunsaker as that is where he met his wife Susy who was also going to school there. The Hunsakers came to Kimball 18 years ago when Jared became General Manager of the Clean Harbors Kimball Incinerator, a position he still holds. Susy works as a nurse for the Kimball Hospital, and all of the Hunsaker children are very much involved in Kimball School activities.

Jared is still paying it back, or forward, whatever, as he is on the Kimball School Board, and has also put in time coaching youth football. What a great honor to a great football player and we await word as to whether he will also be named to the Top 22!
