Shoe decorating contest to help those with cancer

Kimball resident Fran Wallin was traveling recently when she came upon an interesting contest. Wallin, who heads the local Relay For Life, saw the pink shoe decorating contest and wanted to bring it to Kimball to highlight those suffering from breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is each October.

There are two categories for the contest: business and individual.

Any businesses that wants to enter the contest should decorate a shoe, boot or other footwear in a pink theme and display it. Any type of material may be used, and creativity is valued. The business should also contact the Observer, which is keeping a list of everyone in the contest. The business should also put out a jar to allow people to donate. The business which raises the most money through the contest will be recognized.

All funds raised through the contest will be donated to the Festival of Hope, which helps cancer patients in Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming with non-medical expenses that are related to their cancer treatment. For more information about the organization, visit http://www.festivalofhope.net/.

Shoes may be displayed the morning of Oct. 27. Funds should be turned in by 5 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Observer. The winner will be announced the following week.

Individuals who wish to participate may also decorate footwear in a pink-theme. Contact the Observer for a place to display the footwear.
