    The Honor Flight Network is a program that sends World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans to Washington, D.C., in order to see the memorial for the war in which they fought.     The Kimball City Council approved two requests for KENO funds and its annual budget at the Sept. 16 meeting. The city council approved a budget for the coming fiscal year. The only issue brought to the council’s attention was the amount promised to the Welcome Center. The county had previously pledged $500 monthly and the city pledged $1,000 monthly.   • County unemployment rate slightly improves

    The unemployment rate for Kimball County showed a slight improvement from July to August in numbers released last Friday by the Nebraska Department of Labor. The numbers provided by the department showed a 3.1 percent unemployment rate for August, down from 3.5 percent in July. The August numbers showed there were 1,945 in the labor force last month with 1,884 employed and 61 unemployed. There were 1,954 in the July labor force with 1,886 employed and 68 unemployed.     James Arthur Stander, 82, lovingly known to his family and many friends as Jim, passed away while holding the hand of his wife on Sept. 20, 2014, at 4:44 p.m. in Reno, Nevada. Born on December 20, 1931 in Kimball, to Fred and Minnie Stander, Jim was raised on his family's wheat farm.     Chase County came to Kimball Friday night and took home a 38-6 victory in the football battle between the two Longhorn teams. Kimball scored first, but it was all Chase County from that point on. On a cloudy, but calm football night that was delayed 30 minutes due to lightning and some brief rain, Chase County sent the opening kickoff out of bounds allowing the local Horns to start on their 38 yard line.     The Western Trails Conference Girls Golf Tournament will take place at Bridgeport today (Thursday) with a 9 a.m. start time.     Some exciting volleyball action for the Kimball High Lady Longhorns this past week as they ran their season record to 7 wins and 5 losses. At the Hemingford triangular they lost to the host school 18-25 and 24-26, but cam back strong to win over Gordon-Rushville 25-22, 22-25 and 25-18.     Ryan Muneio improved his season best time by over a full minute in running Kimball High's best time at the Alliance Cross Country Invite this past Saturday. Muneio ran 18:20 over the 5K course to earn the 8th place medal in the boys varsity division.     Kimball area drag racers recently traveled to Bandimere Speedway in Denver to participate in the NHRA Division 5 Summit Racing E.T. Finals held Sept. 11-14. The annual event hosts 15 NHRA Division 5 tracks where the best bracket racers in the region compete in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Pro Bike and High School for NHRA Divisional Championships and a chance to go to Pomona, Calif., for the NHRA World Championships.
