The Local Emergency Planning Commission met for the first time since Kimball County recently rejoined Region 21 Emergency Management. Kevin Sherman was named chairperson, with Wayne Elliot as vice-chair, Laura Bateman as secretary and Ron Leal as the information coordinator. After two public information meetings, and with input from dozens of interested citizens, the South Platte Natural Resources District chose to indefinitely postpone action on the Oliver Reservoir streamflow Enhancement Project. At their April 11 meeting the SPNRD board reviewed the purpose of the project, to maintain an adequate water level in the local reservoir for sufficient recreation. Six new members were inducted into the National Honor Society during Kimball's annual NHS Induction ceremony – a momentous occasion for four sophomores, one junior, and one senior. As one Kimball teacher battles ovarian cancer, another sets out to prove that no one fights alone. Kathleen O’Brien, longtime Kimball teacher, has been fighting cancer but Jeri Ferguson and her high school civics class, in a show of support, have planned a fundraiser for her. Braxton Miller and Shay Heim of Kimball competed in the 2017 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships on Saturday, April 1. Their journey began on Feb. 12 when each of the young men won their age bracket in the local contest. Miller and Heim then competed and won at the district level on Feb. 18. The Kimball High boy's golf team had the best round ever while setting a new school record at the Morrill Tournament this past week. April 18 will go into the record books as the date the Kimball boys scored a team round of 298 to better the previous round of 302 shot a few years back by the team consisting of Kendall Ferguson, Jeff Greenwood, Henry Heeg, Landon Smith and Todd O'Hare. The Kimball High boy's golf team kept their wining streak alive with a victory at the Scottsbluff Tournament Monday. No problem for the Longhorns as they captured Division Two at the Scottsbluff Country Club with a 319 score, 54 strokes better than runner-up Chadron, with their 373 total. Kimball High senior, Jordan Greenwood, got a visit from Southeast Community College head golf coach Bill Campbell this past week and ended up accepting the offer of a full ride scholarship to attend the two-year college, located in Beatrice, to continue his education and play golf for Campbell. The area spring sports schedule is moving along, that is when the weather permits. The Kimball High track team didn’t get a meet in this past week when the Mitchell George Calvert meet was called off due to bad weather.
