  • Kimball County agrees to "Live Healthy"

    Aleta Pearson|Jan 26, 2017

The second meeting of 2017 for the Kimball County Board of Commissioners held on Jan. 17 was a lighter load than their typical meeting. Commissioner Daria Faden reported early in the meeting that Jamie Soper, sponsor of the Substance Abuse Coalition at Kimball High School, had requested a time for students to present to the board the actions they have taken to promote no smoking, no drugs and no alcohol at the school. That presentation is scheduled to be held during the next board meeting. Board Chairman, Larry Engstrom reported that PADD...

  • Across the fence

    Tim Nolting|Jan 26, 2017

This week I would like to say “Thank You” to all of you who have taken the time to read my stories, reminiscences and retellings of historical people and events in the Heartland of this great nation. I have personally enjoyed sharing these with you and have been pleased to know that they have been appreciated by you. Growing commitments in other areas of my daily life have clearly indicated that I must make some choices about how I spend my time. My commitment to a weekly column consumes more of the time that I believe I should be exp...

  • President Trump, time and Nebraska sunsets

    Aleta Pearson|Jan 26, 2017

There is so much I want to say about last Friday’s Inauguration of Donald J. Trump as our 45th President of the United States, and yet so much has already been said that I find it might be easier to attempt a lengthy commentary on the less tumultuous concepts of time and space. The whole thing has me in quite a conundrum actually. I am a female supporter of Trump, and yet, as many of you who truly know me know, that being a reporter is only my day job and that there is a lot more to me than meets the eye, or the page, I should say. Because o...

Floyd Watson Jr. came from a family consisting of his parents and six children. The family lived in Durham, North Carolina. Floyd was an athlete in his high school years (football and track) and went on to college to learn and to play football....

  • Kimball one to six year plan - underpass projects replace rail spur work

    Tonia Copeland|Jan 26, 2017

City of Kimball street department superintendent Jim Shoup reported to the City Council that two projects were deleted from last year's one to six year plan and two different projects replaced them. At the regular City Council meeting, on Tuesday, Jan. 17, Shoup said that the deleted projects originally on the one to six year plan were no longer necessary or feasible. One, a turning lane on Highway 30 near IOS/Castronics, could not have been completed because the highway belongs to the State of...

  • History of adult coloring

    Aleta Pearson|Jan 26, 2017

The history of adult coloring is longer than one might first expect. Although the first adult coloring book was published in 1961, it was far from the likes of what we are seeing on the store shelves today. That first venture into adult coloring entertainment was actually created by a couple of advertising executives who were poking fun at the corporate world. The pictures were accurate, portraying what looked like a coloring book aimed at children explaining what daddy did at work, however the captions were complete adult satire. One page of t...

  • Unsafe properties targeted for clean-up

    Tonia Copeland|Jan 26, 2017

Kimball City Council recently took another step forward on properties deemed unsafe within city limits. During the recent City Council meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 17, council considered properties at 106 and 106 ½ Washington Street. These properties are listed as fire hazards and unsafe for neighbors; they have non-operational vehicles, and debris that can harbor vermin, as well as broken windows that could allow access into the dwellings. City attorney Kent Hadenfeldt counseled city leaders...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Jan 26, 2017

A couple of long road trips to North Platte this past week to cover the SPVA Conference Tournament. Had some fog to battle on the trip home on Thursday but the roads were alright. I saw a lot of good basketball and talked to a lot of old friends. I am proud to report that both the Kimball girls and boys represented our school and our town in great fashion. As I have reported several times, the Kimball girl’s team is hurting with the loss of their leading scorer, Alex Reader, who will have major knee surgery this week, but they have r...
