Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The 2016 High School sports season is winding down. The Nebraska State Track and Field Championships are this weekend in Omaha at Burke Stadium tomorrow and Saturday. The District Golf was held at Valentine this past Tuesday and the State Golf for Class C is this coming week on May 25-26 at the Kearney Country Club Course. We do have some baseball/ softball starting up but I have not been able to round up a schedule on the newly formed Legion Team as of yet. I heard they had a game at Kimball this past weekend but again, I have no results for you readers as of yet.

Mike Daum was back in Kimball for a few days this past week and took in his sister Danika’s graduation. Mike is still wearing a boot on his foot as he heals up from a stress fracture that occurred during this past basketball season at South Dakota State University. While home he also gave a short talk complete with a video show at the Kimball Manor. He told me he was headed back this week and ready to start his off season workouts as soon as he gets the O.K. to go on the bad foot.

The two men’s golf leagues who play at the Four Winds Golf Course held a combined scramble this past Sunday attracting 18 hardy golfers on a cold and dreary day. When the last putt was holed the brave set of golfers who weathered the stormy conditions and who came out on top was the team of Ty Garrett, Gary Haack, and Bob Elwood shooting 65. One stroke back with a 66 was the team of Aaron Koski (Four Winds new assistant greens keeper), Bob Kellner, and Jerry Beguin. The team of Lynn Anthony, Randy Bohac, and Gene Golding finished in third place shooting 69.

Kimball had three young athletes qualify for the Nebraska State Junior High Track and Field Meet held in Gothenburg this past Saturday but only two made the trip. Carli Wurdeman elected to not go and attend the High School graduation. Jacob Withrow competed in the long jump and had a best leap of 16’0” and Jenna Greenwood went 29’10.5” in the triple jump.
