Vince's Corner Golf Scramble in the Books

The 2014 fifth annual Vince's Corner ABCD Double Draw Golf Scramble is in the books with good weather for the most part although some golfers got a good soaking as they finished out their round on Sunday. The two day, four person scramble is one of the largest, and one of the favorite tournaments each season as it resembles a homecoming reunion for lots of former Kimball residents who no longer live here but enjoy coming back for two days of golf and lots of fun and festivities with old friends. A total of 32 four person teams made up of 128 golfers played for bragging rights and lots of attractive prizes.

Several of the participants got into town on Friday and played a practice round, then enjoyed a Friday night meal at the Windbreak Restaurant prior to the drawing for the Saturday play. Each team had an A, B, C, and D player, by draw, and the top four places were rewarded both days plus an overall placing for both days total. The winning team on Saturday consisted of Kendall Ferguson (A) Mike Syracuse (B), Beck Brandon (C), and Nick Haas (D) with a handicapped score of 56.659 after shooting 15 under. Second place with the same order was Bill Hinton, Scott Wamsley, Clint Nelson, Gabe Evans shooting 58.796. Third place was Dave McCarville, Brady Urich, Don Buddecke Sr., Bruce Tjosvold with 59.201. Fourth place was Dave Federson, Mike Mason, Dave Mann, Roger Wynne with 59.920.

Another round of eating at the Windbreak after Saturday's round of golf and then another draw for Sunday's play and the golfers had a 9:30 a.m. tee time on Sunday morning after going off at 12 noon on Saturday. Sunday's winning team from A to D was Henry Heeg Jr, Henry Heeg Sr, Don Trofholz, Jon Staehr with a handicapped round of 58.641. Second place was Tim Rohas, Joel Staehr, Austin Martinex, Roger Wynne with a 59.134. Third place was Tanner Hinton, Keith Staehr, Vince Heeg Jr., Rollie Hager shooting 59.819. Fourth place was Kevin Hauser, Roy Rojas, Todd Sterling, Bill Faddis with 60.706. Highlight of the day was a hole in one on #6 by Austin Martinez. As mentioned, some of the golfers finished just ahead of a downpour while others were caught trying to finish and others got to shelter after hearing the warning horn to get off the course and came back out to finish when the storm was over.

The top four A players after compiling results from both days saw Henry Heeg Jr. on top with 121.283 edging out Kendall Ferguson with 121.318, Dave Federson 3rd with 122.840, and Dave McCarville 4th with 123.401. Mike Syracuse was the top B player with 119.318, Brady Urich 2nd with 120.907, Keith Staehr 3rd with 121.582, and Jon Elwanger 4th with 123.027. Top C player was Brandon Beck with 120.624, Clint Nelson 2nd with 121.941, Austin Martinez 3rd with 122.519, and Kelly Garrett 4th with 122.581. Nick Haas was the top D player with 117.534, Roger Wynne 2nd with 119.054, Gabe Evans 3rd with 120.109, and Jon Staehr 4th with 121.641.

Golfers found food and refreshments on the course both days and flag prizes on all holes both days of play as well. All golfers were handed a goodie bag with balls and tees plus a Vince's Corner polo golf shirt when they checked in. The golf course was in excellent condition and drew many favorable comments from the out of town players. Four Winds Pro Chad Wise was on top of everything and made sure the tournament went as planned and Henry Heeg and the entire Heeg family turned out to volunteer for any and all duties that needed to be handled. other than a good dousing late Sunday, it was truly an awesome two days of scramble golf, and I didn't hear too many complaints about the rain. Henry Heeg assured there would be a sixth annual come next year.

However, the tournament was not only a day of fun for those participating, but funds gathered also went to a good cause as, due to the support of the golfers, $1,100 was raised in this tournament for the Wounded Warrior Project.
